The Y's

They own the block, you want it back — no one's asking nicely.

The Y's

The Y's are a street-level rival gang in the Saints Row franchise, first encountered in the original Saints Row (2006). Operating out of Steelport, they are one of the two principal rival organizations the player's 3rd Street Saints must outmaneuver and outgun to claim the city's criminal hierarchy. They represent the gritty, territorial, block-by-block end of the gang world, standing in contrast to the more militarized Ronins.

Their role in the narrative is that of a persistent, escalating obstacle: a gang that controls key districts, enforces its presence through drive-bys and turf wars, and must be systematically broken before the player can declare themselves the undisputed top dog of Steelport.

Lore & Background

In the criminal ecosystem of Steelport, the Y's carved out their territory through the same brutal arithmetic that governs every gang in the city: presence, firepower, and the willingness to make an example of anyone who crosses them. They are not the Ronins, with their imported weapons and corporate backing; the Y's are street-born, hustler-coded, and deeply embedded in the neighborhoods they control. Their members patrol in loose packs, mark territory with graffiti and body count, and treat the 3rd Street Saints as a new upstart problem to be solved with the same methods they use on everyone else.

Their rivalry with the player's gang is the backbone of the early-to-mid game conflict. Every district the Y's hold is a district the player must take, and the escalation is personal: what starts as a territorial dispute becomes a war of attrition where the Y's adapt, send bigger crews, and hit back harder after each loss. They are the gang that teaches the player what it actually costs to run a city.

Culturally within the franchise, the Y's occupy the role of 'the local.' They are Steelport's homegrown thug operation, the gang that has been there before the player arrived and will be there after the player leaves. Their identity is tied to the city's concrete and its underbelly, making them a constant in the world even as the player's ambitions grow beyond it.

In Their Own Story

The neon over the laundromat buzzes and dies, buzzes and dies, and in that stuttering half-light the Y's are already there. Three of them, leaning against the brick with the easy confidence of people who've never been told to leave. One's got a duffel bag slung low, the kind that's heavy with more than clothes. They don't raise their voices. They don't need to. The kid running the corner store already knows what the silence means. Across the street, a 3rd Street Saints cruiser idles with its engine off, waiting for the green light from a lieutenant who's still deciding whether this is a negotiation or a body count. The Y's leader spits, adjusts his jacket, and says something so low the only person who catches it is the one who's about to learn what 'no' sounds like in Steelport. The duffel bag gets shouldered. The laundromat sign flickers back on. Nobody runs. Nobody has to.

Reader's Guide

THE Y'S — GANG DOSSIER

Appearances: Saints Row (2006), with possible references or cameos in later entries.

Role in the Saints' rise: The Y's are the first real wall the 3rd Street Saints hit. Before them, the player is a small crew making noise. Against them, the player learns what it means to hold a district under fire, to lose a member, to come back with a bigger crew and a grudge. They are the mid-game boss structure that forces the player to shift from 'we can win a fight' to 'we can win a war.'

Key relationships: Directly opposed to the 3rd Street Saints. Indirectly opposed to the Ronins, as both gangs want the same blocks. The Y's do not ally with the Ronins; they simply exist in the same food chain and respect the same rules.

Signature set-pieces: Territory-control missions where the player must clear Y's out of a district under time pressure. Drive-by encounters where Y's vehicles ambush the player on the streets of Steelport. Escalating crew size as the player's reputation grows, forcing the player to bring more muscle and better weapons.

Voice/visual notes: The Y's are styled as a street gang — loose, urban, aggressive. Their aesthetic is grounded in the neighborhood rather than imported. They are the 'local' threat, the gang that knows every alley and every exit. In the game's irreverent tone, they are the punchline to the joke that says 'you thought you were the top dog? Meet the neighborhood.'

They are not the final boss. They are the lesson.
