3rd Street Saints
From one street to the stars — the Saints don't ask permission.
The 3rd Street Saints are the player-led criminal gang at the heart of the Saints Row video game franchise. Named for the street in the fictional city of Stilwater where the organization is founded, they serve as the player's identity across the series — a tight-knit crew that starts as a small local gang and grows into a sprawling criminal empire. Their story spans multiple cities and eventually the cosmos, escalating from street-level turf wars to interstellar spectacle.
Led by the player character (known in-game as "The Boss"), the Saints recruit a core group of loyal friends and push outward against rival organizations. The franchise's tone shifts dramatically across its run, from a relatively grounded 2006 street-gang narrative to the over-the-top science-fiction set pieces of the later entries, before a 2022 reboot reimagines the premise with a new cast.

Lore & Background
The 3rd Street Saints are born from the working-class streets of Stilwater, a fictional American city. The player character assembles a crew of loyal friends — Johnny Gat, Fat Joe, and others — to carve out a territory and build an empire from nothing. What begins as a modest gang operation on a single street quickly escalates into a full-scale criminal enterprise spanning multiple cities, rival organizations, and eventually the broader world and beyond.
The gang's identity is defined by loyalty, dark humor, and an escalating sense of absurdity. Early entries ground the story in street-level gang warfare with a recognizable urban backdrop, while later installments push the narrative into science fiction, alien invasion, and increasingly ridiculous set pieces. Despite the tonal shifts, the core remains constant: a group of friends who refuse to be told what they can or cannot do, and who answer to no one but each other.
The 2022 reboot reimagines the franchise with an entirely new cast of characters and a fresh take on the Stilwater setting, while retaining the core identity of the 3rd Street Saints as an underdog crew that takes on a city — and, in the spirit of the series, eventually takes on much more.
In Their Own Story
The neon signs above 3rd Street buzz and flicker over rain-slicked asphalt. Johnny Gat leans against the hood of a stolen muscle car, shotgun across his knees, watching a rival crew push their painted line one block further into their territory. Fat Joe's radio crackles with a half-finished song, the bass rattling the windows of the closed laundromat next door. The Boss steps out of the sanctuary, keys jangling, and the three of them exchange the look that means it's time. The night is young, the city is loud, and nobody on 3rd Street is going to sleep until the whole street belongs to them again.
Reader's Guide
3rd Street is the Saints' founding territory in Stilwater, and it's where the player's story begins. Visually, it reads as a working-class urban corridor — narrow sidewalks, low-rise storefronts, graffiti-tagged walls in the gang's signature green, and a tight cluster of alleys that give it a claustrophobic, lived-in feel compared to the wider boulevards of the surrounding districts.
The gang's sanctuary (their HQ) sits within the block, serving as the mission hub, upgrade shop, and fast-travel point. Early missions anchor here: the first turf confrontation, initial crew recruitment, and the sequences that establish the player's presence in the neighborhood. As the player pushes outward and takes over rival territories, 3rd Street shifts from a contested strip to a fully controlled stronghold — enemy graffiti gets painted over, rival patrols thin out, and the ambient audio shifts from tense to confident.
Map-wise, 3rd Street sits in a central district of Stilwater, flanked by rival gang territories. In the 2006 game, the city is divided into a handful of gang-controlled zones, and 3rd Street is the one the player starts with. In the 2022 reboot, the layout is reimagined but the same core idea holds: this is home base, the place you return to between jobs.
A small detail fans notice: the street's storefronts and signage are populated with fictional brands that recur across the series, creating a consistent in-world economy and a sense that Stilwater is a living city beyond the missions.
